What is a Double Cone Vacuum Drying Machine?
A double cone vacuum dryer is a gentle, indirect drying system designed for batch processing of free-flowing powders, grânulos, and filter cakes.
How it works:
- Drying Chamber: The product is loaded into the double cone vessel, which is then sealed.
- Vacuum: Air is removed to create a vacuum inside, which lowers the boiling point of water. This allows moisture to evaporate at much lower temperatures (typically 30-60°C).
- Rotation & Misturando: The entire vessel rotates slowly, tumbling the material constantly. This ensures all particles are evenly exposed to the heated wall surface.
- Indirect Heating: The double-cone jacket is heated with hot water, steam, or hot oil, transferring heat through the wall to the product.
- Vapor Removal: The evaporated moisture (vapor) is continuously drawn out by the vacuum system, leaving behind a perfectly dry, free-flowing powder.
Key Technical Advantages
- Gentle & Low-Temperature Drying: Ideal for heat-sensitive products (like vitamins, enzymes, APIs) that can be damaged by high temperatures. Preserves product color, potency, and structure.
- Uniform Drying: The constant tumbling action ensures every particle is dried evenly, eliminating wet spots and ensuring batch-to-batch consistency.
- Fast Drying Cycle: Vacuum conditions speed up moisture removal, significantly reducing drying time compared to tray or oven dryers.
Energy Efficient: Lower operating temperatures and efficient heat transfer reduce your energy costs. - Closed & Safe System: The sealed, vacuum operation is perfect for toxic, flammable, or oxidizable materials. It prevents contamination, protects workers, and recovers valuable solvents.
- Easy to Clean & Maintain: Simple, smooth internal surface allows for quick and thorough cleaning. High-quality stainless steel construction ensures durability and hygiene.
Core System Components
- Construction: Made from high-grade 304 or 316L stainless steel, with a polished interior for easy cleaning (Ra ≤ 0.8 µm available).
- Heating Options: Hot water, steam, or thermal oil jacket.
- Vacuum System: Can be connected to a standard vacuum pump or a complete solvent recovery system.
- Controls: From simple manual panels to fully automatic PLC control with recipe management and data recording.
- Safety: Features include pressure relief, safety interlocks, and explosion-proof options.

Double cone vacuum Dryer FAQS
It is suitable for drying a wide range of materials, including:
Pharmaceuticals: APIs, antibiotics, grânulos, intermediates
Chemicals: Pigments, catalysts, dyes, polymers, fine chemicals
Food & Nutraceuticals: Plant extracts, vitamins, especiarias, food additives
Others: Ceramic powders, cosmetic powders, and heat-sensitive compounds
Low-temperature drying: Protects heat-sensitive materials from degradation
Faster drying cycles: Lower boiling point under vacuum accelerates moisture removal
Energy efficiency: Reduced heat loss and lower operating temperatures save energy
Solvent recovery: Vapors can be condensed and recovered for reuse or safe disposal
Closed system: Prevents contamination, reduces oxidation, and enhances operator safety
Drying temperatures typically range from 30°C to 300°C depending on the material, with cycle times ranging from 2 para 8 hours. Both factors depend on moisture content, product sensitivity, and batch size.
The dryer jacket can be heated with:
Steam (most common for moderate temperatures)
Hot water (for lower temperature requirements)
Thermal oil (for higher temperature applications, up to 200°C+)
A vacuum system—such as a liquid ring vacuum pump, rotary vane pump, or steam ejector—is connected to the dryer to remove air and vapors. The choice of pump depends on the required vacuum level and whether solvents need to be recovered.
Cleaning is straightforward due to the smooth, polished interior. Options include:
Manual cleaning through large manways
Clean-in-Place (CIP) systems for automated cleaning
Spray ball systems for efficient rinsing and sanitation
Yes. The dryer can be equipped with a condenser and solvent recovery system to condense and collect evaporated solvents, which is essential for pharmaceutical and chemical applications to meet environmental and safety standards.
While both are conical, the double cone dryer rotates fully for mixing, whereas a conical vacuum dryer may have a fixed vessel with an internal agitator. The double cone design typically offers better mixing and more uniform heat transfer.
Consider your batch size, material characteristics (bulk density, moisture content), and required drying time. We can help you test your material in our lab and recommend the optimal size and configuration.
